Handheld vacuum cleaners are great for when you need a quick 5 minute cleaning job done. The problem is many of the models out there just don’t have the reach needed for certain cleaning tasks. When the Black & Decker BDH2000FL came out, it removed this problem with its 4 foot flexible hose complete with a variety of attachment tools.
Now this popular model has been upgraded to the Black & Decker BDH2020FLFH which claims to be more powerful and with a new floor extension stick with a pivoting floor head to make your floor or ceiling cleaning jobs easier.
But how much more different is it to its predecessor?
Average User Rating:
Strong and Lasting Suction Power: Unlike other handheld vacuum cleaners that use NiCad batteries which tends to lose suction power and fade quickly, this uses lithium ion batteries which lasts longer as well as giving a stronger suction power.
Stick Vac Extension Stick with Pivoting Floor Head: With this attachment, it makes cleaning the floor or ceiling easier without having to use a chair or overstretching yourself.
Light and Portable: It weighs less than 4lbs which makes it easy to carry around with you (if needed) when cleaning. With the wraparound flexible hose, you can carry this in one hand out to clean the car.
Good for High or Low Cleaning Tasks: With the 4 foot flexible hose, the long crevice and 2-in-1 nozzle/brush tool attachments, you can now easily clean in areas without overstretching.
Easy to Store: The wraparound flexible hose makes storing this away a simple task. There’s no need to bend the hose this way or that way or worry about tripping over it, the flexible hose just wraps around the body of the vacuum cleaner and clips in place.
The Black & Decker BDH2020FLFH Flex was released with high expectations to carry the name from its previous model. It quickly became popular, racking up hundreds of customer reviews in the process. We have researched over 50 positive and negative user reviews on Amazon to provide you with the good and bad points of their experiences with this hand vac.
This new model has been upgraded to a powerful 25 air watts whereas the old model was 22 air watts. Combined with the lithium ion battery, this ensures a stronger suction power which will make your cleaning task easier and quicker. Although the old model was pretty strong already, any extra is always an added bonus as a few users have found.
Other than the extra air watts, the new model still has the same high performance motor, 3 stage filtration system and cyclonic action built in. These help the handheld vacuum cleaner to maintain its performance and powerful suction. You shouldn’t have much problems for day-to-day cleaning of various dirt, dust and debris around your home.
Black & Decker claims the battery life on the BDH2020FLFH lasts up to 16 minutes on a full charge but some users have found this lasts slightly longer than its predecessor with a run time of up 30 minutes. Same as its predecessor, suction power still stays strong when the battery starts to run low. This drops just as the battery runs out.
A charging base is provided with a storage compartment for your attachments (the floor extension stick will not fit in here) but it still takes 4 hours for a full charge which is the same as the old model.
With the lithium ion batteries, you can expect this to last a very long time and same as the old model, it will hold its charged power up to 18 months and can be left on the charging base as it will only charge when needed.
The new model also comes with a 2 year warranty but the old model came with a 3 year guarantee. However, this shouldn’t be a problem as the lithium batteries should ensure this vacuum lasts three times as long as the guarantee.
Design & Attachments
This model comes with a new stick vac extension stick with a pivoting floor head which enables you to easily clean the floor without having to bring out your full vacuum cleaner. Users who have upgraded love this attachment as they were constantly on their knees to clean dirt from the floor or under the table which gave them back problems.
The previous model did not offer this type of attachment and many users have found this extremely useful when they only need to do a quick 5 minute clean up on the floor. The only downside is that users find that the suction power is decreased when the extension is used and without a motorized brush built in the pivoting floor head, it is not as effective on carpet.
Similar to the old model, the new one is also designed with a 4 foot flexible hose and still comes with the same attachments which are the 2-in-1 brush/nozzle, crevice and pet hair brush tool to help clean hard to reach areas, stairs, narrow gaps, door/window frames and pet hair.
Unfortunately, you cannot attach these accessories to the extension wand which is a bit disappointing, but they can be attached to the extension hose. Users who have upgraded to this model claim that it is much louder than its predecessor.
Ease Of Cleaning
Same as the Black & Decker BDH2000FL, the upgraded model still holds a good 17 ounces of dirt in its transparent dirt canister. However, the dirt canister on the BDH2020FLFH can be removed easily by popping out the whole bin for ease of emptying and washing.
The old model did not have this option and many users had found it awkward to wash and empty the bin. You can still empty the dirt canister by pulling a latch on the side without taking the whole bin out but it is a bit awkward with the extra weight of the vacuum cleaner.
Users find that with the removable bin, it’s easier to keep the dirt canister clean and ensures the rubbish goes directly into the trash and not over the floor as it had done with the previous model.
It is also easy to clean the filter which is still the same as the old model. All you need to do is pop open the bin, twist the filter out and wash it. Wait until it is completely dry before putting it back on otherwise you will get the horrible damp smell. However, same as its predecessor, the filter will get dirty pretty quickly with some users washing it after every 2 to 3 uses.
The Black & Decker BDH2020FLFH Flex has an overall positive review rating on Amazon.

A handheld vacuum cleaner has become a much needed item in many homes today but it’s important that suction power is strong. It’s useful for those handy short jobs and especially useful for cleaning the car as you don’t have a cord to prevent you from going far. With the powerful suction and long reach of the Black & Decker BDH2020FLFH, it makes the perfect handheld vacuum to get these chores done.
Although there is not a lot of difference between the BDH2020FLFH and the BDH2000FL, with the added bonus of the extra 3 air watts in the new model and the stick vac extension stick, it is ideal for families with children who make a lot of mess that ends up on the floor and for the elderly who are unable to be on all fours to clean the floor.
However, if you rarely have mess and don’t use a vacuum cleaner often, then it would be a better idea to get the BDH2000FL model instead.
